first_imgDOI/Clodagh Farrugia O’NeillDOI/Clodagh Farrugia O’Neill The chapel dedicated to Christ the Redeemer in Ħal Għaxaq will be restored by the Restoration Directorate.This was announced by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici during a visit on site.Bonnici said that the fifth call for applications under the Local Council Restoration Works Scheme was recently launched. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment toward local heritage saying that it is manifested in such initatives.The work that is being suggested includes an intervention on the facades and parvis, where cleaning will be done by using very light dry brushing. Dirt and black crust have accumulated in areas not washed by rain and deterioration in the stone surface is present in all parts of the facade.Further the plaster will be removed, and reconstitution of damaged stone where possible will be done. Sculptural and decorative stonework where missing or heavily deteriorated will be replaced using appropriate templates.The chapel was built in 1852 on the site of a wayside shrine dedicated to Christ the Redeemer erected in 1807.
