The tree trimmer’s injuries were not life-threatening, but he became very weak during the rescue. He was taken to County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance. The type of accident is a common hazard for tree trimmers working with palm trees and sometimes proves fatal, firefighters said. “It’s like a ring of dead fronds, and the weight of those things by themselves will come down and trap the tree trimmer,” Brown said. “That’s a lot of weight.” The crown dust also poses the risk of suffocation, he said. A tree trimmer working north of Gardena was rescued Friday when a ring of palm fronds collapsed around him, pinning him to the tree trunk 35 feet off the ground. The 30-year-old man’s colleagues called firefighters shortly after 11:15 a.m. as he worked between two houses at 121st Street and Normandie Avenue in the unincorporated Athens area, county fire Capt. Mike Brown said. “He was trimming the dead branches when the crown of the palm tree released and basically collided on top of him,” Brown said. “He was put in a position where he was attached to the tree and had to bear the weight of the crown.” The tree trimmer was not visible from the ground when firefighters arrived.
