UN expert urges Haiti to work on human rights issues

first_imgAn independent expert on human rights has welcomed the recent completion of the electoral process in Haiti as “remarkable progress” while also urging the authorities to address the situation in prisons and to redouble efforts to help Haitians affected by Hurricane Matthew and the 2010 massive earthquake.Gustavo Gallón, who has just completed an official mission to the country, praised “the transparency, professionalism and commitment of the Provisional Electoral Council, and the provisional government authorities in leading the elections.”Gallón said detention conditions in Haitian prisons are “extremely inhuman, cruel and degrading,” and that long pre-trial detention, which amounts to an average of 70 per cent at national level, is among the main causes of prison overcrowding, which reaches a rate of 358 per cent, equivalent to 1.43 square meters per prisoner. The United Nations said there are prisons where the situation is even worse, according to a study conducted in 2016.“It can be said that 91 per cent of all detainees in this prison who are awaiting trial are illegally or arbitrarily detained, which represents an increase of 23 per cent since 2014,” said Gallón , adding that the excessive level of overcrowding is also a factor, among others, that contributes to the high level of death in prison.“If the current trend continues, projections for the year 2017 can result in the death of 229 prisoners, an annual mortality rate of 21.8 per 1,000,” he said.Taking note of the establishment of a new Presidential Commission to assess the situation in prisons, Gallón appealed to the authorities to implement urgent actions aimed at the abolition of prolonged pre-trial detention in order to improve prison conditions and to respect the rights of people deprived of their liberty.last_img read more

Haitian Senator Opens Fire at Local Protesters Outside of Parliament

first_imgPORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – A sitting of the Senate called to ratify the appointment of Prime Minister Fritz William Michel was adjourned Monday after Senator Jean-Marie Ralph Fethière fired gunshots to defend himself against demonstrators who had entered the legislative compound.“I defended myself. Self-defense is a sacred right,” said Senator Fethière after firing the shots into the crown.A photojournalist with the Associated Press was among two people wounded when the legislator fired his gun in the yard of the Haitian Senate. According to The Guardian, the photojournalist Chery Dieu-Nalio was shot in the face and the second man, Leon Leblanc, a security guard and driver, was also injured was also severely wounded.Local media reports said that journalist, who was covering the Senate sitting, was hit and Senator Patrice Dumont told the radio station, Vision2000, the shots were fired by Fethière and were not aimed at the journalist and a security guard who had been assigned to the Parliament.Following the shooting, the Senate was adjourned “sine die” meaning that it had been adjourned with no specific date for its resumption. This is the second time in as many weeks that the Senate had been adjourned without a specific date for its resumption. Before the shooting incident, Senate President Carl Murat Cantave had complained on radio that the scene had turned chaotic. He also accused the Haiti National Police (PNH) of not from preventing individuals he described as “thugs” from accessing the Senate yard. The Senate president said that the “thugs” had been invited by opposition legislators intent on preventing the ratification vote.Earlier this month, the Chamber of Deputies gave Michel the green light even as opposition legislators sought to disrupt the proceedings. When the vote was taken late last Tuesday, 76 deputies voted for Prime Minister Michel’s policy, three abstained, and none voted against. But last Wednesday, dozens of armed protesters posing as “political activists” took a stand around the parliament despite the security measures deployed by the police and many of them made their way into the building breaking everything in their path.Last month, President Jovenel Moise had called on Parliament to approve the nomination and government of Prime Minister Michel, describing him as “a brilliant civil servant who has devoted his entire career to serving the people of Haiti”.Michel, a former executive in the Ministry of Economy and Finance, became the fourth prime minister of Haiti since President Moise became the head of state in 2017.last_img read more

Spiffx enters African market with Cheza Gaming

first_img Lennart Gillberg, SpiffxSpiffx has entered the African market after signing a deal to launch its B2B white label product, Take5Live, on regional sports betting and gaming operator Cheza Gaming. As a first step for the partnership, Take5Live, a game based on Spiffx market activity that allows customers to place bets on there being a goal within the next five minutes, will be launched in Kenya. However, this is likely to be precede launches in some of the other African countries for which Cheza Gaming holds a gaming license, such as in Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC and Uganda.Lennart Gillberg, Spiffx founder, commented: “We are thrilled to start a partnership with Cheza Gaming, and for the opportunity to enter the African betting market with our products. The African market is, to a big extent, driven by mobile phones and lower but frequent bets.“In some of the African countries, the development of sports betting has continued to move very fast. Our Index Market and the Take5Live product fulfils the market demand. Being able to offer betting with lower stakes and a higher pay back potential than the average odds from a traditional bookmaker is an advantage in the African market, which makes our Take5Live extra interesting.”Barney Barrow, Cheza Gaming Chairman and CEO, said: “We are always looking for ways to engage players on a more bespoke-product approach in comparison with the normal competitor. We are very pleased to partner with Spiffx and look forward to launch its products on the markets we operate.”Spiffx is looking to take advantage of the exponential growth recorded in Kenya’s mobile-based sports betting industry, which has been aided by the ease of placing bets online and by paying via mobile money platforms such as M-Pesa and Airtel Money. However, the betting firms still operate in a legal grey area with stringent regulations. For example, the country’s Betting Control and Licensing Board is currently under pressure from a dozen betting firms to suspend the issuance of new permits. The list of sports gambling platforms currently present in Kenya includes Betway, the official sponsor of West Ham United FC, as well as other players such as EliteBet, Betin, JustBet, Bet365, BetYetu, eazibet, Lucky2u, 256Bet, Royal Kenya Bets and go-bet.Gillberg concluded: “There are not many European betting companies established in the sector, but many have their eyes on this growing market. We are looking forward to this cooperation and the possibility to create exciting products together with Cheza Gaming.” Share Betway and Dafabet grow La Liga sponsorship portfolios August 14, 2020 Share Related Articles BtoBet refines African SMS payment options with Tola Mobile  August 20, 2020 StumbleUpon ESI Digital – No Drama Please… Esports growth should be treated as business as usual  August 20, 2020 Submitlast_img read more
