first_imgThe collision occurred around 9:40 am at the intersection of 102 Street and 101 Avenue in Fort St. John. Police believe that the 15-year-old male cyclist was travelling south bound on 102 St., on the east sidewalk, when he went through the four-way stop, without stopping. He entered the path of an SUV which was turning east bound onto 101 Ave.The vehicle collided with the cyclist, knocking him off his bike. The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, suffered injuries to his head and scrapes to his body. He was taken to the Fort St. John Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police are not considering any charges against the driver of the vehicle, who remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. With the warmer weather, Police anticipate an increased amount of cyclists sharing the roadways with vehicles, and would like everyone to take greater care in order to prevent future collisions. Bicyclists are reminded that they are required by law to wear helmets, not to ride their bikes on the sidewalks, and to obey the rules of the road. This includes stopping at controlled intersections and only proceeding when safe to do so. Drivers are encouraged to take extra care to ensure that they check for cyclists at intersections, and to be aware of their presence on the roadways.- Advertisement –last_img read more
