Brazilian Lower House Approves Sending 300 Military Personnel to UN Force in Lebanon

first_img The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies approved sending up to 300 military personnel to Lebanon, where they will join the United Nations interim force operating in that country, the legislative body announced. The administration initiative, which must now be voted on by the Senate, authorizes the “Brazilian Navy to send a ship with an aircraft and up to 300 military personnel to join” the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The contingent of ‘blue helmets’ is made up of 12,000 military and police personnel from 35 countries, including Brazil, according to the lower house’s press office. UNIFIL has in previous months been the target of attacks with explosives that have wounded a dozen French and Italian Soldiers. The force was deployed in 1978 to monitor the border between Lebanon and Israel. Its mission was prolonged and expanded following the 2006 war between the Jewish state and the Lebanese Shiite militants of Hezbollah, which left around 1,200 dead, the majority civilians.
