Arsene Wenger believes a week off can work wonders for his Gunners

first_img They are a point ahead of Leicester and City – although the Foxes will regain the lead if they beat Chelsea on Monday – and boss Wenger believes a week off will do wonders for the Gunners. He said: “It’s a big game, we want to win at home and beat City at home. We have eight days to prepare. It will be an interesting one but we at least can recover first and prepare then. “I was a bit anxious because we had given a lot on Wednesday and came back very late on Thursday morning. I knew Villa were fighting to survive.” Giroud netted his 14th goal of the season and 50th in the league for the Gunners after Theo Walcott was brought down in the area by Alan Hutton. He added to his hat-trick from Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win at Olympiacos and Wenger says the 29-year-old deserves some credit. He said: “I believe he is at the top of his game. He is questioned sometimes but finally the numbers get people to realise he is a good player. “Olivier has improved technically. His link play is better and when you have the option to go for long balls he is always an interesting option. “He’s not got electric pace, he is more a player who likes to play with his back to goal. He is not spectacular individually but he is a very efficient player for the team. Mentally he is very strong.” Wenger managed Aston Villa boss Remi Garde at Arsenal, with Garde winning the title in 1998, and had words of encouragement for his former midfielder. “It’s not completely a lost cause yet. E very year we have seen teams survive that, before Christmas, everyone was saying they had absolutely no chance. Last year one of those were Leicester,” he added. Garde is yet to win in his five games as Villa boss with the side without a league victory since the opening day of the season and eight points from safety. The former Lyon boss said: “We can still be safe but we are coming into a period where we have to win. I see this situation as more of an opportunity than a problem but we have to be ready. “I still believe we are capable of winning the next game. I enjoy working in this league. We are struggling, I still haven’t won a game and I’m very frustrated but I know in football you can change things with work.” But Garde knows his side need more belief up front with Villa the league’s joint lowest scorers having netted just 13 times. He added: “I’m happy to have a team who still create chances. Some of the players need more confidence. “I know there is a big expectation for strikers when we play at Villa Park. We played the league leaders which is not easy for anyone.” Arsene Wenger thinks Arsenal will be in perfect shape for their crunch clash with Manchester City. The Gunners host City next Monday after going top of the Barclays Premier League with Sunday’s 2-0 win at Aston Villa. Olivier Giroud’s penalty and Aaron Ramsey’s goal gave the Gunners a comfortable victory against the rock bottom hosts. Press Associationlast_img read more

Sub-state week is only a couple weeks away; plus high school action tonight, youth wrestling results

first_imgSouth Haven, Caldwell at Udall:  Teams playing: Caldwell, Dexter Cedar Vale, Flinthills, St. Paul, South Haven, Udall.Analysis: This will be a huge tournament for both the South Haven boys and girls who could get into the state tournament. South Haven boys are ranked No. 2. Udall is looming at No. 7. The two teams have knocked out the other the past two seasons in sub-state. So this is indeed a grudge match. The urgency is there for both teams as they are both senior laden. On the girls side, South Haven girls are not ranked, but are to be taken very seriously. They have a tough sub-state especially with Dexter Cedar Vale, St. Paul and Caldwell which all have winning records. •••••Wellington youth wrestling:Wellington youth wrestlers had a great day at the Mulvane Tournament on Saturday. Wellington had five champions: True DeJarnett, Zane Cornejo, Kyler Henry, Tyler Murray and Carter Burnett! Wellington’s lone second place finisher was Seth Brown and the third place finishers were Skyler Branam and Grant Glover. Talan Cantrell and Axel Norris both finished fourth. by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow —  While the high school teams play tonight, the year-end sub-state basketball tournaments are looming. We have the most current updated sub-state analysis for Sumner County teams. Also, Wellington youth wrestlers traveled to Mulvane over the weekend. How did they do?…High School schedule tonight: Wellington at Wichita Collegiate. JV girls- 4:15 p.m. at Collegiate High School, JV boys- 5:45 p.m. at Collegiate Middle School, Varsity girls – 6 p.m. at high school, Varsity boys – 7:30 at high school.Sumner County games:Argonia at CaldwellBelle Plaine at Wichita IndependentGarden Plain at Conway SpringsSouth Haven at Oxford. Sub-state analysis: With the high school basketball season winding down, every game becomes critical as far as the eight-team sub-state seeding is concerned. The better the record the higher the seed. Here’s a quick preview of how the Sumner County teams are stacking up with their sub-states as of today. Oxford at Moundridge: Teams playing: Central-Burden, Canton-Galva, Cottonwood Falls, Berean Academy, Herington, Moundridge, Peabody-Burns, Oxford.Analysis: Central boys are ranked No. 7 and Moundridge is No. 9. Oxford has an outside chance and can be considered a dark horse. Moundridge girls at No. 6 appear to be the favorites. Wellington — Sub-state at Mulvane.  Teams playing: Wellington, Mulvane, Wichita Trinity, Clearwater, Winfield, Augusta, Rose Hill, Wichita Collegiate.Boys: Wellington appears to be an eighth seed in the tournament meaning it will play the top ranked team in sub-state in the first round. That could easily be Clearwater which currently has the top record. It is locked in a battle with Wichita Trinity and Mulvane which are right behind them by a game.If Wellington and Clearwater end up playing one another in the first round, it will be the fourth time the two teams will have met. They might as well share locker rooms. The records for this sub-state are as follows:Clearwater 12-4, Wichita Trinity 12-5, Mulvane 11-5, Winfield 9-7, Wichita Collegiate 9-7, Augusta 7-9, Rose Hill 6-10, Wellington 5-11.There are three game left for which the seedings are made (the final regular season game doesn’t count). Rose Hill, the closest team to Wellington in the standings, owns the tiebreaker with Wellington since the Rockets beat the Crusaders in the regular season.Girls: Like the boys, Wellington girls don’t appear to have any “must” games down the regular season stretch. They are currently seeded fourth and could get seeded higher. But the significance of doing so isn’t all that great. It is widely believed there is not much separation in the top four teams in this parity driven sub-state.The records are as follows: Mulvane 12-4, Wichita Trinity 12-5, Clearwater 11-5, Wellington 10-6, Winfield 5-11, Wichita Collegiate 4-12, Rose Hill 4-12, Augusta 3-13.This could be a sub-state Wellington could win. Wellington’s loss to Mulvane a couple of weeks ago, the current No. 1 seed, was a loss the Lady Dukes would like to have back. It most certainly wasn’t a case of them losing to the better team – at least on that night. Belle Plaine, Conway Springs at Conway Springs Teams playing: Belle Plaine, Conway Springs, Douglass, Garden Plain, Leon-Bluestem, Sedgwick, Whitewater-Remington, Wichita Independent.Analysis: Garden Plain girls are most certainly the favorites in this sub-state. On the boys side, Wichita Independent has a 13-4 record and is ranked ninth in the state. Argonia at South Barber:Teams playing: Argonia, Attica, Cunningham, South Barber, Norwich, Stafford. Analysis: On the girls side, Argonia and Norwich appear on a collision course for the sub-state championship. The two teams tangled against the other in the sub-state volleyball championship with Argonia winning. South Barber could be a dark horse here. Close Forgot password?
