first_imgGeorgetown blast Bartica 6-0; West Demerara beat Berbice 3-1By Joe ChapmanGEORGETOWN and West Demerara Football Association teams marked their entry into the inaugural Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA)-promoted GT Beer Super Sunday Night Cup Inter-Association eight team championship with emphatic performances Sunday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. In the Group B matches played, West Demerara dismissed the challenge of Berbice, 3-1, while Georgetown demolished Bartica 6-0, as they placed themselves in a position to be among the two qualifiers who will emerge from Group B’s round-robin preliminary play involving the four association teams.Scorers for West Demerara, from left, Morgan Denny and Jamaal Harvey.Morgan Denny began the scoring for the West Demerara side netting in the 29th minute of play and before halftime came Jamaal Harvey who got a brace. He gained his first in the 40th minute before the first session ended with the West Side ahead 2-0.As they looked like cruising towards an easy win, Akeem Bollers reduced the advantage by scoring in the 76th minute for the Berbicians; but five minutes later Harvey sealed the win with another goal for an eventual 3-1 victory. The second game saw a double from Darren Benjamin, who set the pace for a 6-0 humbling of Bartica by one of the tournament favourites Georgetown, after the Bartica side looked promising in the opening minutes of feisty play.Bartica, looking good with some nice buildups against their City rivals, were unable to finish and soon after Georgetown took the lead through a crisp shot by Hubert Pedro in the 28th minute. It was taken from outside the 18-yard box on the right side going past the Bartica goalkeeper Cleon Doris who was guarding his near post. That shot was followed by another that rushed past a dazed Doris in the 43rd minute from outside – this time by Phillip Rowley.Taking the game to a next level, Georgetown continued to dictate the pace of the game and seemed to set for shots from outside. It came in the 70th minute when Dwayne McCalman hammered in goal number three and soon after in the 79th minute Darren Benjamin lashed home another for a 4-0 lead. Before long it was 5-0 when Ryan Dowden sent Georgetown further into the lead in the 81st minute. Benjamin returned for his second goal slotting home in the 86th minute to end the game 6-0.The tournament continues on Sunday with two more matches at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.last_img read more
